Short Thoughts

Unfortunately my life as a bookseller can be very busy and so I don't get a chance to properly review everything I read. Instead I will try to post a couple of lines on here to say what I thought of those unlucky books that, for whatever reason, get missed on my main blog.

Black Heart Blue by Louisa Reid

This book is incredibly well-written and traumatic. It handles the subject matter well and is very effective. It will break your heart!

Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough

This is one of the creepiest books I have ever read! It is well-written and builds suspense well. There is brilliant world building and the characters are very realistic. A fantastic ghost story and a great read!

When She Woke by Hillary Jordan

This was a good book but it could have been better if the author hadn't tried to cram so many controversial issues into one novel (abortion, religion based cults, affairs, homosexuality, morality). Including so many didn't add anything to the story and diluted the effectiveness of the main plotline.

Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson

There was a lot of fuss about this one but I found it disappointing and predictable. Perhaps it had been hyped up too much and so my expectations were too high. It failed to build suspense and was anti-climatic.

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

A brilliant collection of stories, full of imagination with the animals expertly brought to life. I especially loved Rikki-Tikki-Tavi!

My Dear I Wanted to Tell You by Louisa Young

I found this book very boring and frustrating. The main character came across as very shallow. The author used a word that I was unfamiliar with and when I looked it up I discovered that she had used it incorrectly. She also overuses swear words. If you want to read a decent wartime romance you should read The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons.
